The nothing-off-limits comedy centers on two best friends, Will (Eric McCormack) and Grace (Debra Messing), and their lives in New York City with hysterical pals Jack (Sean Hayes) and Karen (Megan. So if you have strong feelings about anything below, I'm all ears. Known for paving the way for LGBTQ+ television, the wildly popular ’90s sitcom Will & Grace broke ground for featuring two gay leads.
Full disclosure: As a gay man, I have absolutely zero authority over whether the female stimulation depicted is accurate-or fun.
Here, I've rounded up TV shows and films with the best sex scenes on Netflix featuring LGBTQ couples.
But there's something really erotic about watching a sexual relationship blossom after a romantic (often dramatic) series of events that don't begin with a boring porn opener like, "Hey, I'm Tyler-want to f*ck?" Don't get it twisted: Porn is great when I want to see straight-up nudity and pretend that I don't need buckets of lube to make anal sex pleasurable. It's gotten to that point where these days, sex scenes on Netflix can be more of a turn-on for me than actual porn. My hope is that these graphic, raw sex scenes will help those still exploring their identities to understand their sexualities are completely normal, no matter who they prefer. Thankfully, as cinematography has evolved, so has mainstream media's portrayal of intimacy across the spectrum of sexuality. (They were all PG-13-maybe the R-rated ones were a little more gratuitous, but I was too nervous to search for them on my family computer.) As a gay teenager still in the closet, these muted portrayals of queer sexuality only furthered the idea that my identity was something I needed to hide.
If you do watch this movie to learn about Monsecour's journey, keep in mind that it does not represent all trans people's experiences and many of them have negative feelings about how the character's story was explored. When I was younger, most LGBTQ sex scenes I saw didn't show much beyond two people passionately making out, a little hand-over-the-crotch action, and tight shots of faces moaning. I shouldn’t have to - they are real and not uncommon in the trans community." She added, "The process of creating Girl allowed me to accept myself as transgender and helped me finally love myself without anger or shame." "I do not want to sugarcoat my experiences or hide away my darkest thoughts. Scenes that might be disturbing to watch, but that are crucial to show," she said. "We made a film with some hard, honest scenes. Monsecour responded to the criticism in an essay for The Hollywood Reporter, where she stated that the film is an honest representation of her own story, but can obviously not encompass all trans people's experiences. After the backlash, Netflix added an advisory warning to the beginning of the film and created a website with resources for LGBTQ+ people watching. According to CBC, some trans film critics balked at the graphic self-harm portrayed in the film as well as how much focus is given to the main character's genitalia. The movie stars a cisgender actor and was directed and written by Lukas Dhont, a cisgender man. Inspired by transgender ballet dancer Nora Monsecour's real story, Girl has come up against a lot of criticism.
Whether you identify as LGBTQ+, are an ally, or are trying to educate yourself, watching these films will expand your appreciation for this beautiful community.
And the films are all just as entertaining as they are educational and impactful. Any of the Netflix's offerings will help you learn about and celebrate the LGTBQ+ community. There are even films that focus on the experiences of Black LGBTQ+ community members, which is especially timely in 2020 given the current Black Lives Matter revolution. The streaming service boosts touching dramas about love and heartbreak, documentaries about transgender people's experiences, a movie about the intersection of feminism and gay rights, and so much more. Thankfully, there are several resources to help in your education process, from books about the LGBTQ+ community to LGBTQ+ movies on Netflix. For example, it's important for straight-identifying people to learn about the history and struggles of the LGBTQ+ community so they can be better allies and advocates. And it's more important than ever to learn about communities of which you may not be a member. Learning is a lifelong process that doesn't end when you receive your diploma.
